Frozen okra from Egypt: Extra, Zero, Excellent or One?

Okra is graded by the length of the pod. The grade you choose decides how the product cooks, how it looks in the bag, and which shoppers it suits. Here is how we grade frozen okra, and how to choose.

The four grades

• Extra — pods up to 2.5 cm. The smallest and most tender.
• Zero — 2.5 to 3.5 cm. Small, even pods that hold their shape in a stew.
• Excellent — 3.5 to 4.5 cm. A balanced size for homes and restaurants.
• One — 4.5 to 5.5 cm. Larger pods at a more economical level.

Every grade is supplied as whole pods, frozen individually (IQF) so they pour freely from the bag instead of setting into a block. Need a size between grades, or a mix? We grade to your specification.

Which grade for which buyer?

Retail chains often choose the smaller grades for a premium 400 g bag. Restaurants and caterers usually prefer Excellent or One in 1 kg and 2.5 kg packs. Food factories buy bulk in 10, 20 or 25 kg bags, or 350–500 kg totes. Send us the use and the market, and we suggest the grade.

Packs and brands

Retail 400 g and 1 kg, foodservice 1 kg and 2.5 kg, bulk and totes, in 8 kg or 10 kg cartons. Any grade can be packed under Wadi ElNile, Mazraty, Fontana — or your own private label from the first order.

Season and supply

Okra’s peak harvest in Egypt runs from spring into summer. Because it is frozen at harvest, we supply it all year from stock, and it can travel in a mixed reefer with other vegetables.

Storage and shipping

Store at −18 °C; shelf life up to 18 months. Cook from frozen and do not refreeze. A 20 ft reefer takes about 10 t and a 40 ft reefer about 20 t, with exact details fixed at the final agreement. The HS code we use is 0710.80, indicative and confirmed per order.
